Tangerine 2015 awards1/6/2024 ![]() It's hard to imagine a better choice for opening night of the 4th annual Oak Cliff Film Festival. *This article appears in the Jissue of New York Magazine.Greetings again from the darkness. They deserve a place at the table the way movies like this deserve a place at the multiplex. To one degree or another, these are characters with stature - it’s their culture that’s stunted. James Ransone’s Chester is a lying sack of opportunism with an unexpectedly romantic heart. Mouthy and washed out, O’Hagan lets you glimpse the emptiness of Dina’s life. Taylor is her perfect counterpart - centered, with a capacious soul. Rodriguez has a gift for physical comedy - fast, fierce, brazenly confident - but also the ability to let the mask drop to reveal a grim, pensive face. But by then this cooker has built up so much pressure that merely seeing these people (plus the mother-in-law, the “fish,” and Chester) in one place has you gasping. Tangerine builds to a rather stagy farce climax in a store with the name Donut Time. He can express his true feelings (and Alexandra can pick up needed cash) in the front seat of his cab as it passes through a carwash - proving all you need is an iPhone a few bucks for suds, spray, and a wipe-down and a crack editor to create one of the most riotously suggestive (off-camera) sex scenes in the annals of cinema. Wedged in his apartment alongside his traditional family - wife, child, overbearing mother-in-law - Razmik goes into the back streets to find another kind of woman. The third major character is a seemingly cool customer, a cabdriver named Razmik (Karren Karagulian) who listens impassively to a menagerie of passengers (one lonely old babbler is played by 86-year-old Clu Gulager), his role in the action inexplicable until he begins to circle the neighborhood where Alexandra, Sin-Dee, and their fellow workers drift. is baked without being warm, empty-feeling and indifferent, a place for transacting business. while the characters race to find what they’re after before darkness (and Christmas). Much of Tangerine is bathed in - what else? - orange, the low, slanted winter sun suggesting a perpetual 5 p.m. When people live this close to the edge, in identities they’ve fashioned for themselves, every moment seems like a fight to exist. ![]() You might howl as Sin-Dee storms into a decrepit motel room full of prostitutes and cowering johns and drags Chester’s little blonde thing, Dina (Mickey O’Hagan), out by her bleached hair - but you also worry she’ll draw blood. This is a post-camp transgender comedy, both hilarious and heart-attack serious. The scenario created by Baker and his co-writer, Chris Bergoch, sounds like it’s from the Pedro Almodóvar playbook, but the style isn’t camp, high or low. ![]() Alexandra makes Sin-Dee promise there’ll be no “drama,” but the “Dee” in Sin-Dee clearly stands for “drama.” So when Sin-Dee’s faux-genial attempts to ascertain her boyfriend’s whereabouts turn into earsplitting fits, Alexandra peels off to hustle up customers and hand out cards advertising a show she’ll be performing that night. This sends Sin-Dee on a tear down the sidewalk with Alexandra and the iPhone cameraman in pursuit - Sin-Dee with her tangerine skin, streaming blonde hair, and skinny ass, Alexandra with her black hair and more sumptuous cushion. Kitana Kiki Rodriguez is Sin-Dee, who has just emerged from jail after 28 days and learns while sharing a doughnut with her best friend and fellow sex worker, Alexandra (Mya Taylor), that her boyfriend-pimp, Chester, has been sleeping with a “white fish” (i.e., a biological woman, and Caucasian). Consider the two leading ladies, who are beautiful in conventional ways, apart from their penises. ![]()

The composition on the 17mm lens is better and if I wanted to get more of the building I could simply shift up the lens and stitch multiple images together.įor the final comparison I wanted to see what panorama would look like between the two methods. The major issue is the fact that it’s difficult to compose correctly when shooting to correct in post. Resolution wise, I lost a little under 20mp which is better than before but still a significant amount. I still needed to heavily crop the file but the angle of view is now wider than the 17mm image. The vertical lines are much better than the original image before corrections were applied. The images below were shot with the Laowa 12mm f2.8 zero distortion lens and the Canon T-SE 17mm f/4.0L lens.Ĭomparing image quality is difficult because I did use two different lenses, however it would seem that shooting with a wider angle lens can work. The best way to do this is to shoot with a wider angle lens, as mentioned above. At the end of the day though, I don’t consider these issues significant by any means – you could get away with just shooting a little wider.įor the second comparison, I wanted to see if you could overcome the crop factor issues. Your 24mm lens isn’t necessarily going to give the angle of view of a 24mm lens. Essentially if you’re not using a tilt-shift lens and you require corrections in post then you have somewhat of a crop factor to contend with. ![]() The angle of view is also slightly different which is to be expected when you’re required to crop files. If you were shooting with a lower resolution camera, then losing almost half the megapixels could cause a few issues. If resolution is important to you then this may not be ideal but honestly for most people even a 29mp file is more than enough. The original file was 50mp but after the corrections were applied I had to crop into the image and this this left me with a 29mp file. There a few issues though: for example, the image has lost almost half the resolution. The correction applied to this image really works. Now that I’ve corrected the non-shifted image it actually doesn’t look that bad, in-fact it actually looks pretty good. This precisely what you’d expect to see if you tilt the camera. ![]() The building also looks smaller and looks as though it’s falling backward. Also, you’ll notice how the first image is now stretched awkwardly with a greater emphasis given to the bottom section of the frame. There are some clear differences between both images, for one, there’s a yellow boat in the shifted image. I feel like if they trimmed back some of the trees and bushes the building might look a little bigger. Obviously, it’s difficult to have the same composition for both shots but I tried to keep things as close as possible. This allowed me to photograph the building and keep all the vertical lines correct and true. The second image was shot with the camera leveled correctly and the shift feature from the lens applied. To compare both methods, the first image I took was shot without any shift applied and I simply tilted the camera up to see more of the building. It’s probably the best 24mm lens ever made I think Mike agrees, too… am I coming across biased at all? The image quality is superb and the control you have to correct perspective is invaluable. This is my go-to lens for a number of reasons. ![]() The features in camera raw are basically identical so I hope this doesn’t become a point of contention.įor the first comparison, I shot both images with the Canon T-SE 24mm f/3.5L II lens and the Canon 5DSR. Now the title of this article says Photoshop, but I used Lightroom too. Maybe I’m just being snobby, so let’s find out how both methods compare to one another. Tilt-shift lenses are by far my favorite types of lenses they offer so much versatility, especially when you’re shooting architecture… I wouldn’t shoot with any other type of lens! However, up until recently I had never actually compared the results you can produce with a dedicated tilt-shift lens vs correcting distortion from a conventional lens in post. ![]() Ssas tabular processing1/5/2024 ![]() You can process objects interactively using a client application such as SQL Server Data Tools or Management Studio, or a scripted operation that run as a SQL Server Agent job or SSIS package. For more information about deployment, see Deploy Analysis Services Projects (SSDT). However, you can set options to process the model later, after you deploy the solution. Initially, during the early stages of model development, deployment and processing occur together. The project or solution must be deployed before you can process any objects. The account must have read permissions on relational data sources used by the model. The account used to retrieve data is specified in the data source object, either as an impersonation option if you are using Windows authentication, or as the user name on the connection string if using database authentication. For more information about setting administrator permissions, see Grant server admin rights to an Analysis Services instance. For processing that runs unattended, for example using an SSIS package that you schedule through SQL Server Agent, the account used to run the package must be a member of the server administrator role. If you are processing interactively from SQL Server Data Tools or Management Studio, you must be a member of the server administrator role on the SQL Server Analysis Services instance. Processing requires administrative permissions on the Analysis Services instance. This topic includes the following sections: When making a structural change to the model, such as removing a dimension or changing its compatibility level, you will need to process again to synchronize the physical and logical aspects of the model. You can also process all or part of a solution, either ad hoc using tools such as Management Studio or SQL Server Data Tools, or on a schedule using Integration Services and SQL Server Agent. For objects that use ROLAP storage, processing refers to updating the cache before returning query results.īy default, processing occurs when you deploy a solution to the server.
